The ‘Everyday’ Health Benefits of Vegetables
The development of Guidelines for the education of consumers about the health benefits of vegetables is the first key output from the Australian Vegetable Industry Domestic Market Development Strategy (DMDS).
(For Consumer Education)
The production of these Guidelines has been underpinned by an extensive period of health benefit substantiation by a qualified nutritional consultant, thorough market investigation and legal review to ensure the health benefit information is in line with Food Industry Australia NZ (FSANZ) regulations.
The Guidelines establish what can be communicated about the health benefits for vegetables, how it should be worded and the vegetables that it can be said about. They are downloadable from this site as a resource for those wishing to educate consumers about the benefits of eating vegetables.
Research with the general public reveals that, while they know vegetables help reduce the risk of chronic disease, almost 1 in 3 are not concerned specifically about preventing chronic diseases at this time. However, the vast majority of people agree that different vegetables have different health benefits and they are interested in knowing what they are.
To this end we have focused on communicating the more ‘everyday’ health benefits for vegetables, such as sustained energy, building the immune system, healthier skin and improved mental performance.
The PDF download files below comprise the Guidelines for the Communication of Health Benefits and the Relevant Nutrient Content Tables which support the health benefit claims made. Consumer access to the Nutrient Content Tables is required by FSANZ. If you are using the health benefit information in the development of consumer educational materials, you may wish to provide the web address of this page so that interested parties who wish to find out more about the health benefits and the nutritional content can access it here.
You are welcome to use the information contained in the Guidelines in the development of consumer educational tools and materials.
