AUSVEG welcomes the news that government funding for the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI)  is being renewed in 2020, the International Year of Plant Health.

The PBRI supports cross-sectoral R&D and extension to minimise the damaging consequences caused by biosecurity threats to Australian plant industries.

This includes endemic and exotic pests, diseases and weeds that affect Australia’s plant industries, community and the environment.

The research initiative spans across a number of groups including Hort Innovation, Plant Health Australia and the seven plant Research and Development Corporations.

The PBRI coordinates investment in cross-sectoral biosecurity issues, to optimise impact for Australian industry and to better align to broader national goals.

Since its inception in 2017, the PBRI has coordinated the funding of 10 collaborative projects with a total value of $50 million, to support stronger biosecurity.
