It’s that time again – the latest Vegetables Australia is out now and will be hitting mailboxes shortly.

Vegetables Australia – Autumn 2021 is jam-packed full of R&D updates, industry member profiles and an update on AUSVEG’s advocacy activities.

Accompanying this 80-page edition is a ‘Cover Crops for Australian Vegetable Growers’ poster, which provides a starting point for helping you choose a cover crop for your farm. In the magazine, Dr Kelvin Montagu from Applied Horticultural Research explains why this poster has been created, and how to use it.

Vegetable consumption is also in the spotlight, with this publication featuring an update on the CSIRO Taste & Learn program and the VegKIT project. These investments are helping to address significant underconsumption of vegetables by Australian children.

Meanwhile, we speak with Dr Jo Luck from Hort Innovation to find out about the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI) that was established in 2017 to drive plant biosecurity research funding and where it should be best spent. Two projects that derived from the PBRI – Novel topical vegetable, cotton virus and whitefly protection and the iMapPESTS: Sentinel Surveillance for Agriculture program are also covered in this edition.

The Syngenta Grower of the Year award recognises outstanding achievement across all aspects of horticultural production, including growing, environmental management, staff management and quality of produce. In this edition, we chat to past winners Peter Schreurs, Jim Trandos, Scott Samwell and Jason Shields about the award and its significance.

We also catch up with Sam Haddad from H.E. Heather & Co in Brisbane, while Tina Lamattina and Kerri-Ann Lamb reflect on receiving their Women in Horticulture awards in 2012 and 2015 respectively.
