Stephanie Knight, Account Manager for Rijk Zwaan Australia, presents three celery varieties for Australian growers. Kelvin RZ, Sanjit RZ and Tejal RZ, which were featured at the East Gippsland Vegetable Innovation days (EGVID) trials during May 2020 at Lindenow, Victoria, Australia.
Kelvin RZ is Rijk Zwaan’s standout for the mid-Summer and Autumn harvest. It is a slow bolting, tall green celery with dark green leaves and slender, shiny petioles providing uniformity of colour, which enable it to stand out amongst other crops in the field and also on shelves. It has an open plant habit and is strong against black heart. It is a great, versatile variety and can be used as sticks due to its length, and hearts and heads. Commercial seeds are currently available.
Sanjit RZ is a new variety for the mid-Summer and Autumn timeslot. It’s a fast growing variety and the slightly wider petioles should appeal to growers as it can be used for sticks, hearts and heads. Seeds are available for trials over the 2020 season.
Tejal RZ a slow bolting, medium green celery, ideal for Spring and early Summer production. It features increased bulkiness and width in the sticks, few side shoots and sweet flavour. It is has also shown strength against black heart, proving it can also be grown during Summer months. Commercial seeds are currently available.
