The evening brought together growers, agribusiness representatives, and community leaders to celebrate the people and businesses driving innovation, sustainability, and growth across the agricultural sector in North Queensland. The awards showcased the exceptional calibre of entries this year, shining a spotlight on individuals and businesses raising the standard in farming, agribusiness, and rural leadership.
AUSVEG was proud to support the 2025 Bowen Gumlu Growers Gala Dinner through the sponsorship of the Farming Business of the Year and Emerging Leader in Agriculture Awards – two important recognitions that celebrate the incredible achievements and innovations driving horticulture in North Queensland. AUSVEG was represented on the night by Simone Keating (Partnerships & Events Manager), Shakira Johnson (Biosecurity Coordinator), and Cherry Emerick (National Coordinator – VegNET).
Farming Business of the Year Award
Vee Jay’s Kalfresh was named Farming Business of the Year. This fifth-generation Bowen family business combines premium produce with innovative technology to boost efficiency and sustainability. Their commitment to mentoring, hosting field days, and maintaining strong ethical practices demonstrates how they continue to influence the future of horticulture while honouring more than 100 years of family history.
Lifetime Contribution to Farming Award
The Lifetime Contribution to Farming Award was awarded to Leanne Born of Koorelah Farms, recognising her long-standing dedication to North Queensland agriculture. Under her leadership, Koorelah Farms has become one of the region’s most respected horticultural operations, known for its commitment to sustainability, ag tech, and quality. A strong advocate for growers and women in agriculture, Leanne’s leadership continues to inspire and ensure the resilience of the industry into the future.
Ag Tech Industry Impact Award
The Ag Tech Industry Impact Award recognised Chris Monsour of Prospect Ag for his significant contributions to agricultural technology. With more than three decades of experience, Chris has played a central role in advancing ag tech in the region. As an agronomic consultant, researcher, and mentor, he has helped generations of growers adopt smarter, more sustainable farming practices, leaving a lasting mark on agriculture in North Queensland.
Emerging Leader in Agriculture
Recognised as the Emerging Leader in Agriculture Rowan Munro of Vee Jay’s Kalfresh has taken charge of one of North Queensland’s most complex horticultural businesses. He has been praised for his leadership in innovation, his commitment to mentoring his team, and his focus on sustainable farming practices, positioning himself as a role model for the next generation of growers.
“It was a true privilege to present the 2025 Emerging Leader in Agriculture Award to Rowan Munro of Vee Jay’s Kalfresh. Rowan stood out among an impressive group of finalists, including Eilis Walker and Kory King from Nutrien Ag Solutions, and Thomas Ranauld of What Him Said Farming,” said Cherry Emerick, who presented the award on behalf of AUSVEG.
“It was an unforgettable night, with Vee Jay’s Kalfresh taking home two awards – an extraordinary achievement! The evening was filled with laughter, celebration, and genuine appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the region’s farmers.”
Community Stewardship Award
Community contribution was also highlighted on the night. The Community Stewardship Award, sponsored by the Whitsunday Regional Council, went to Belinda Williams and Michelle O’Regan of Stackelroth Farms. For more than 16 years, the farm has built connections between agriculture and the wider community through educational programs, youth engagement, and school partnerships. Their efforts in promoting mental health, literacy, and youth opportunities have made agriculture an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of the Bowen and Whitsunday regions.
The Gala also welcomed special guest Shane Webcke, who delivered an inspiring keynote recognising the contributions of rural communities and the individuals shaping the industry’s future. BGGA also welcomed Assistant Minister for Primary Industry Development, Water and Western Queensland, Sean Dillon MP, further underscoring the importance of government support for agriculture in North Queensland.
