One survey for vegetable, onion and potato levy funded projects
14 July 2025Potato sustainability – undertaking a life cycle assessment
14 July 2025This project aims to support Australian onion growers in reducing losses caused by Fusarium basal rot (FBR), a major soilborne disease that can result in crop losses exceeding 30%. Delivered by the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the initiative will focus on developing cost-effective, integrated disease management (IDM) strategies. These will include field trials on crop rotation, soil and moisture management, plant nutrition, and the use of biological, biostimulant, and chemical controls, building on proven practices from previous research.
The project will primarily conduct on-farm trials to ensure the strategies are practical and adoptable by growers. At its conclusion, an updated IDM strategy will be delivered as a best practice guide, equipping growers with tools to improve disease control, increase marketable yields, and enhance the economic and environmental sustainability of onion production in Australia.
This project has been funded by Hort Innovation, using the research and development levies listed below and contributions from the Australian Government. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture.
