Potato Industry Extension Program

Extension Program for the Australian Potato Industry 2016-19

About the program

The Extension Program for the Australian Potato Industry 2016-2019 is an interactive and flexible program that delivers a wide range of extension activities for growers that are highly matched to industry defined requirements and an increasing demand for improved practices. The Program is delivered via two parallel projects; PT15002 is coordinated by Arris and PT16000 is coordinated by Hort Innovation.

Extension activities are developed on an annual basis and delivered through an extension plan that is developed and endorsed by a Project Reference Group, which represents the widest possible range of industry sectors and regions.

Members of the Project Reference Group include:

  • Bianca Cairns – Hort Innovation
  • Shaun Lindhe – AUSVEG
  • Terry Buckley
  • Frank Rovers
  • Keith Taylor
  • Peter Hardman – PPAA
  • Dr Nigel Crump – ViCSPA
  • Dr Kathy Ophel Keller – SARDI
  • Dr Paul Horne – IPM Technologies
  • Allan Smith – Snackbrands
  • Adrian Dahlenburg – Arris

Program activities

The program recognises the diverse nature of the Australian potato industry and will plan delivery activities to meet those diverse needs. The program uses a wide range of different extension methods targeting the most appropriate method for the technology and information to be extended and the prospective audience for the activity. The best available expertise and human resources for a particular extension topic are used to deliver that activity to industry, which will contribute to continuing to build local expertise and experience in Australia to service the industry in the future.

Stakeholder engagement is a key component of the program in ensuring relevance of the extension activities and annual stakeholder forums are planned. A stakeholder register is being compiled in to assist in defining resources, expertise, and industry profiles that could be used in the planning and implementation of extension work throughout the program. To sign up for this stakeholder register please click here.

Potato industry members are also encouraged to submit ideas for activities to be undertaken as part of the Extension Program for the Australian Potato Industry. These ideas can be submitted here.

PT16000 is undertaking literature reviews on selected industry significant topics and arranging for visits by international experts to contribute to generating awareness of new and developing technologies.
