AUSVEG, Australia’s peak industry body for vegetable and potato growers, has welcomed the Federal Government’s appointment of Deputy Nationals Leader David Littleproud as the new Minister for Agriculture.

“On behalf of the vegetable and potato industries, AUSVEG welcomes David Littleproud’s return as the Federal Agriculture Minister. Given Minister Littleproud’s past involvement in the agriculture portfolio, as well as his strong track record for effective advocacy for our industries, we are glad to welcome him back to the role and look forward to working closely alongside him and all members of the Government to ensure Australia’s vegetable and potato growers can be productive, profitable and competitive,” said AUSVEG CEO James Whiteside.

“We would like to thank Bridget McKenzie for her valuable contributions during her time as Minister for Agriculture and look forward to continue working closely with her in the future to advance the causes of our industries and their regional communities.

“It is important that we provide Australia’s fruit and vegetable growers with the support and opportunities that they need to continue to supply high-quality fresh produce to local and international consumers so that they can build their businesses to support themselves, their families and their communities.”

AUSVEG has also welcomed the appointment of Keith Pitt as Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia.

“It has been a tough start to the year for many Australian growers, as issues such as drought, water access and the ongoing bushfires impact farms, property and regional towns and services,” said Mr Whiteside.

“The Australian agriculture industry is fortunate to have many strong and passionate advocates that are committed to supporting the industry and the many thousands of workers that contribute to regional businesses and their communities. It is critical that they advocate fiercely for our primary producers now so that those who have been impacted by natural disasters can get back on their feet and do what they love doing – growing food and fibre for local and international consumers.

“I look forward to working with Minister Littleproud, Minister Pitt and the Morrison Government to help realise the potential for our industry to thrive into the future, particularly on ensuring our industry has access to a reliable, efficient and accessible workforce, a robust biosecurity system and a well-balanced export cost recovery model that will help grow the value of the agriculture industry.”
