Although not yet commercialised, an ongoing cross-industry research project endeavours to develop the purple sweet corn into a supermarket product, especially because it contains high levels of specific phytonutrients for human health.
The project, Naturally Nutritious (HN15001), is also researching other innovative food products and varieties that are nutritious, delicious and aesthetically pleasing, such as strawberries and macadamias.
The project is supported by the Hort Frontiers ‘Health, Nutrition and Food Safety Fund’; one of seven funds developed by Hort Innovation that facilitate collaborative cross-industry research to secure the future of the horticulture industry.
