This project was conducted to breed supersweet corn hybrids which could handle the particular stresses (diseases, insects and climatic) which afflict sweet corn in tropical and subtropical Australia. Two highly successful supersweet corn hybrids have been bred and released to the industry. The first of these H5 has resistance to a virus, Johnson Grass Mosaic Virus, which has the capacity to devastate existing temperate sweetcorn cultivars. The other is H44 which is a hybrid with greater uniformity of maturing and cob size than H5, which makes it ideal for the canning trade that demands evenness of maturity and kernel size and shape.
