Amaranthus is a common weed in bean production areas. Being a very competitive weed, it can significantly affect bean yields and it also interferes with mechanical harvesters and subsequent crops. Preliminary work conducted by Serve-Ag Pty Ltd and the Department of Primary Industry Water and Environment (DPIWE) identified five products with potential for control of Amaranthus in beans. HRDC funding was obtained in 1996 to further evaluate and develop diflufenican, clomazone, aciflourfen-sodium, dimethenamid, and sulfentrazone for control of Amaranthus and other weeds in beans.
