Sales Performance: Beans have shown double-digit dollar sales growth but a significant decline in kilogram sales (-16.1%). Zucchini is the only vegetable in the competitive set with both dollar and kilogram sales growth.
Price Changes: Beans experienced the highest price increase per kilogram (+33.4%) among comparable vegetables.
Household Purchasing Behavior: Slightly fewer households are buying beans than the prior year, and those that do are buying less frequently. Annual purchase volumes have declined by approximately 500g per household.
Retail Channel Performance: All retail channels are seeing a decline in kilogram sales for beans, with Greengrocers/Markets declining the fastest. Prepacked beans in major supermarkets are the primary contributor to the sales decline.
Demographic Insights: Beans sales are declining across all household types, despite overall vegetable sales growth in young transitional and start-up family households. Higher prices have led to increased annual spending on beans, even as the average kilograms purchased per household have declined.
