Research by the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture has identified a number of factors in plant establishment that can be manipulated to maximise processing pea yield.

One major factor is plant density and spacing, with research finding that maximum yield can be reached when planting at a density of 100 plants per square metre with equidistant spacing between plants and rows. Yield can also be maximised when using drills by using a 13cm configuration.

The research, funded through a strategic levy investment, also analysed other influences including include ground preparation and drill performance, which can increase margins by up to $750 per hectare.
