The latest edition of Vegetables Australia has hit thousands of mailboxes around the country, and it features news and updates on some of the most valuable levy-funded research, development and extension projects in Australia.

In the September/October 2018 edition of the magazine, we feature an in-depth investigation of soil safety with a full profile of the levy-funded project studying pathogen persistence from paddock to plate. This project has uncovered very encouraging findings in the preliminary benchmarking survey of pathogens present on Australian vegetables, and in the next stages it will trial what happens when contaminated manures are added to soil, so keep an eye on our communications for more news!

In other research and development news, we take a look at the Hort Frontiers Health, Nutrition and Food Safety Fund, which is undertaking cross-horticulture research to help growers deliver safe, nutritious and healthy products to Australian consumers. Freshlogic’s Martin Kneebone also offers in-depth analysis of consumer trends that are driving the expansion of vegetable ingredients usage into new products, categories and occasions.

This edition’s cover story is our young grower profile, where we speak to Jake Shadbolt from Scotties Point Farm (pictured above) about his ambitions in the industry and his ideas about how to bring more people into our sector.
