Heliothis are serious insect pest of vegetable crops in Australia. Control has been achieved primarily through the use of chemical insecticides. However, the development of resistance, the increasing cost of developing new insecticides, and growing community concern over the effects of insecticides on the environment require that alternatives to this form of management can be found. Biological control using egg parasitoids is one such method. The research found that native egg parasitoids have potential at managing heliothis but their value as inundative biological control agents remains unclear. Releases of egg parasitoids may best contribute to heliothis management when used in IPM programs.
