More than 90% of Australia’s beetroot is produced in SE Queensland with more than 98% of the crop canned by the Golden Circle and Edgell-Birds factories located in Brisbane. The market predominantly requires a sliced product with a smaller requirement for small, whole beetroot. In recent years, the beetroot industry has become less profitable. Seedling establishment problems are very severe during wet years while quality problems including low root sugar levels significantly increase processing costs. This project has identified beetroot varieties with increased yield, more uniform roots, superior colour, smoother skins, finer root attachements and increased sugar levels.
