Tomato production for fresh market is a thriving industry in northern Victoria but relies heavily on the cultivar Arcadia which was developed to meet local growing conditions and market requirements for fruit firmness. Despite its advantages, Arcadia has been criticised for lacking flavour and fruit size. As part of an ongoing cultivar improvement program in fresh tomatoes this project aimed to breed and/or select genotypes with stronger flavour and larger fruit size and that were suited to both local conditions and production practices.
