Tospoviruses (viruses in the tomato spotted wilt group of viruses) are among the most damaging viruses worldwide. Thrips are the only insects that can spread tospoviruses. This 5-page fact sheet describes the tospoviruses present in Australia, the thrips species that transmit them and the complex biological system involved in the spread of tospoviruses. Infected plants cannot be cured. Management options are presented and they involve preventing or reducing levels of disease in crops by removing or avoiding sources of virus infection and minimising spread by thrips.
