With Christmas just around the corner, Aussie parents are making sure their kids stay off Santa’s naughty list by filling their shopping baskets with plenty of fresh, healthy and delicious local vegetables.
The latest consumer research from Project Harvest, undertaken by Colmar Brunton and commissioned by Horticulture Innovation Australia, indicates that carrots, Rudolph’s favourite snack, along with potatoes and tomatoes, are the top three vegetables being purchased by Australian consumers leading into the festive season.
“The festive season is a time that Aussie families can get together to enjoy each other’s company, with a Christmas meal a tradition in many households. It is good to see so many families loading up on fresh local veggies for their festive feasts,” said AUSVEG spokesperson Shaun Lindhe.
“With so many health benefits, including high levels of vitamin A for healthy eyes, carrots are an essential component for a healthy, well-balanced diet. Eating carrots, along with a wide variety of other veggies, will ensure your eyes will be in top condition to look for Santa.”

Carrots, along with beans, capsicum, lettuce, cucumber and plenty of other vegetables are in peak season over the Christmas period. This means that plenty of in-season veg can be enjoyed with family and friends, in fresh tasty salads or Christmas roasts.
“Australian consumers are lucky that so many vegetables are in season when the festive season is upon us, meaning their holiday meals can be complemented with myriad fresh vegetable options,” said Mr Lindhe.
“We encourage Aussie families to include as many veggies as they can in their shopping baskets these holidays so they can take advantage of all the fresh, high quality produce from hard-working local growers.”
“Also spare a thought for the hard-working reindeer on Christmas Eve – if you are buying carrots this festive season, don’t forget to add some to your basket for Santa’s crew so they can make it from Australia to London in one piece.”
