Vegetable grower Carmel Ingram, from Bonaccord Ingram based in Gippsland, Victoria, has received the Boomaroo Nurseries Women in Horticulture Award at the Hort Connections 2019 National Awards for Excellence on Wednesday 26 June.

The Boomaroo Nurseries Women in Horticulture Award recognises a leading female member of the Australian horticulture industry who has demonstrated outstanding ability and success in her chosen field.

For the past 40 years, Carmel has worked alongside her husband Keith to manage the pack house operation at Bonaccord Ingram in Bairnsdale, one of Victoria’s largest vegetable growing operations. In this time, Carmel has raised three children and contributed to her local community, in addition to juggling her work on the farm.

Carmel has gone about her work in the background and has been a consistent contributor to Victoria’s vegetable industry without seeking any of the limelight.

“Carmel’s passion and commitment to her business and the Australian horticulture industry is an inspiration to those around her. Carmel’s story rings true for many women who work in the horticulture industry and her contributions to her business are vital to its success,” said AUSVEG Deputy Chair Belinda Adams.

“Carmel was one of 13 strong contenders for the Women in Horticulture award this year. There are so many passionate, dedicated women who are responsible for a range of roles throughout the industry, and this award recognises the key role that women play in ensuring Australian horticulture continues to be a strong contributor to the country’s agricultural sector,” said Boomaroo Nurseries Head of Marketing, Strategy & New Business Development Emily White.

Hort Connections 2019 is the premiere event for the Australian horticulture industry and attracted around 3,500 local and international delegates to Melbourne from 24-26 June. The National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner was the capstone event of the conference and honoured growers and Australian horticulture industry members for their outstanding achievements.
