Cairns, Australia – The 2014 Steritech Women in Horticulture award was tonight presented to Queensland vegetable grower and agribusiness leader, Melinda Brimblecombe, at the AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence in Cairns, Queensland.

Ms Brimblecombe received the award in recognition of her contribution to championing the role of women in production horticulture, and the mentoring of women within the Australian industry.

“Women play a fundamental role in Australian horticulture, be it behind the scenes or in key managerial roles, and this award is an important recognition of that fact,” said AUSVEG CEO, Mr Richard Mulcahy.

“Based in Queensland’s Lockyer Valley, Melinda Brimblecombe has proven to be a dynamic, proactive and inspiring businesswoman, who has worked hard to ensure other women in production horticulture gain the recognition they deserve. She is a worthy recipient of this award.”

AUSVEG Is the leading horticultural body representing Australia’s 9,000 vegetable and potato growers.

Melinda Brimblecome took to championing the cause of women in horticulture after attending Growcom’s Women in Horticulture Leadership Workshop, where she identified that many women working in farm offices do not have the qualifications to validate their skills, despite high-levels of experience.

Since completing her own Diploma of Agribusiness she has worked with the Australian Agricultural Colleges Association to create a Farm Administration course designed specifically for people who have prior experience. She is currently fulfilling her aspirations as an industry-wide mentor, visiting a variety of key growing areas to speak to women and inspire them.

The Women in Horticulture Award was proudly sponsored by Steritech.

The AUSVEG National Convention, Trade Show and Awards for Excellence is the biggest event in Australian horticulture. This year, around 1,000 delegates attended the event at the Cairns Convention Centre.
