Two South Australians have been recognised as the vegetable industry’s finest at the AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner in Hobart tonight.

The Young Grower of the Year Award, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, was presented to Mr Michael Vorrasi of South Australia while fellow South Australian and Nuffield Scholar Mr Steve Newman was presented with the Environmental award sponsored by Netafim.

AUSVEG Chairman, John Brent, applauded both of the South Australian award winners, noting that AUSVEG had received a record high number of nominations across all award categories this year.

“Michael Vorrasi has demonstrated a real interest in establishing networks with other young growers and is well deserving of this award. Developing strong leadership within the next generation of Australian growers is vital for the future of our industry, so it’s fantastic to see Michael stepping up as one of our future leaders,” said Mr Brent.

The 2012 AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner was held at Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Hobart on Saturday 12 May, which recognises growers and other members of the Australian vegetable and potato industries for their outstanding achievements throughout the year.

AUSVEG is the national peak industry body representing the interests of around 9,000 vegetable and potato growers around Australia.

Young Grower of the Year winner Mr Michael Vorrasi is an emerging leader within the industry, having moved into a management and operations role within his family hydroponic lettuce business.

Environmental Award winner, Steve Newman, was recognised for his strong contribution to the industry through a range of environmentally sustainable farming activities and practices.

“Mr Newman is widely recognised for his commitment to sustainable growing practices and has actively promoted responsible management of land, water and other resources,” said Mr Brent.

The AUSVEG National Convention was attended by over 800 delegates from across the country and is now the biggest annual horticulture event in Australia.
