Western Australian Joyce Babun, from Carnarvon, was tonight presented with the Industry Impact Award, at the 2012 AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence.

The 2012 AUSVEG National Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner was held at Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Hobart on Saturday 12 May, which honoured growers and other members of the Australian vegetable and potato industries for outstanding achievements in their field.

AUSVEG Chairman, John Brent, congratulated Ms Babun on winning the award, noting the record high number of nominations received by AUSVEG across the 12 award categories.

“Ms Babun, together with her late husband, has made a significant contribution to the industry and is well deserving of this prestigious award,” said Mr Brent.

“The marketing network she has established has helped to streamline growers’ access to the market end of the supply chain and this has had an enormous impact on raising the professionalism of farms in the region,” said Mr Brent.

The Industry Impact Award is presented to an individual or business who has had a positive impact on the vegetable and potato industries through areas such as innovation, research, or water management.

AUSVEG is the national peak industry body representing the interests of around 9,000 vegetable and potato growers around Australia.

Joyce Babun was recognised for her pivotal work in setting up a marketing group in the Carnarvon region, which has enabled some growers to sell directly to Woolworths.

The AUSVEG National Convention and Awards for Excellence was attended by over 800 delegates from across Australia and is now the biggest annual horticulture event in the country.
